Today wasn’t just another shark cage diving day – it was a record-breaker, the kind of trip that reminds you why the ocean never stops surprising you!
We anchored at site, did our site briefing, and then sat with the deceptive stillness that usually occurs before something unforgettable happens. The cage went in, the first divers slipped into the cage, and then the friendly shadows of copper sharks began to materialize in the distance. One copper shark. Then another. And another.
The count kept climbing throughout our trip.
By the time our last divers had climbed out of the cage, we had counted a total of 21 copper sharks!
TWENTY-ONE!!!
Twenty-one copper sharks on a single trip!
Although the number of individuals varies on each trip, and the copper sharks do prefer the concept of “safety in numbers”, we do not commonly see so many individuals together at once.
Copper sharks are powerful, curious, and endlessly graceful. Today, they moved around the cage like a perfectly choreographed ballet – tight turns, sudden bursts of speed, then effortless glides past the bars. Some came close enough to lock eyes with our divers, reminding us just how intelligent and aware these animals are.
Inside the cage, time did that strange underwater thing where minutes stretch and contract all at once. Every direction you looked, there was motion. Fins slicing through the water. Sunlight flickering across bronze backs. Heart rates elevated, but fear replaced by awe!
Breaking the record wasn’t about numbers alone. It was about connection. About being present for a moment that can’t be replicated or scheduled. Nature showed up in full force today, and we were lucky enough to be invited into it.
As we headed back to shore, the boat buzzed with grins that wouldn’t fade. Days like this are why we dive. Why we respect the ocean. And why some experiences stay with you long after the salt dries on your skin.
Today, the copper sharks rewrote the Cape Shark Adventures record book!
